Vol 1 Chapter 5
"When you disconnect, try accessing THE MIST, even if you think you're being fooled. If you have any questions, feel free to send me an email, and I'll personally handle your case, Mr. Mu-heon. My VT port email address should be included in the package."
"An opportunity to meet another version of yourself is right in front of you, so what on earth are you trying to avoid!"
Following that voice echoing in his ears, after disconnecting, he unconsciously approached the THE MIST capsule connected to one side of the room.
When he placed his hand on the semicircular lid of the glossy, opaque black capsule, it opened with a whirring sound, startling him. The inside was large enough for an adult man to lie down comfortably. He couldn't tell how it differed from a regular capsule, but seeing how the inside sank softly like a sofa, he thought it might be nice to sleep inside if it was well-ventilated.
"THE MIST..."
In the midst of his dry muttering, a long-suppressed emotion suddenly surfaced.
"If I could walk freely once again..."
He closed the capsule again. There was still one day left until the game's opening day. Dragging his unresponsive right leg, he searched for new information about THE MIST. He felt he should at least know some basic information before playing the game.
He might have felt swept up by the words, but perhaps he wanted to give it a try, as Yoon Seok-ho had suggested, even if he was being fooled.
In the port line after Kang Mu-heon left, Yoon Seok-ho ran his hand through his hair and turned around.
Then, as if by magic, another person was standing in the room that had been empty.
"Was that person who just left one of the project participants?"
When the man in a researcher's coat asked, Yoon Seok-ho nodded.
"Yes. He's the last one I added at my discretion."
"Hmm... It's rare for you to do something so impulsive. Well, do as you see fit. Just make sure there are no complaints about customer service."
As the man joked with a grin, Yoon Seok-ho also smiled lightly, his eyes curving.
"I will. He turned out to be more interesting than I expected."
"You're not falling back into bad habits, are you? He's a customer. Get your head straight."
"I know that well. Don't worry, I don't have time to focus on such things."
The man with his hands in his pockets laughed quietly.
"Well, anyway, the real thing starts tomorrow. It's going to be tough."
"For you too."
The silhouettes of the two people leaving the port line became dots in an instant and soon disappeared.
Now, no one remained in the room.
Finally, a day passed, and it became April 10th.
With an inexplicable strange feeling, he lay down in the capsule, and soon various wire-like things connected to his body. Just as he started feeling dizzy, a moment later he found himself standing in the character creation space.
[ Welcome to the world of THE MIST, Mr. Kang Mu-heon. ]
It was a voice so real it was hard to believe it was a guide sound.
[ Mr. Kang Mu-heon's character does not exist. Would you like to create a new one? ]
"Yes."
The space in front of his eyes distorted for a moment, and soon a naked hologram that looked exactly like him appeared before him. It was a hologram more vivid than looking in a mirror.
[ Please modify any parts you wish to change. ]
In THE MIST, only one character can be created per person. Characters are basically identical to their owner's appearance and gender, and plastic surgery-level retouching is not allowed. Only hair color, eye color, small moles, or tattoos can be adjusted. This level of restriction was a rule widely implemented in other VT industries to prevent crime, so there didn't seem to be much opposition.
He first examined the hologram that looked exactly like him. Black hair that slightly covered the neck and a cold-looking face. While he thought it might be nice to have a completely different impression for his new life...
"...Just create it as is."
[ Creation complete. ]
He didn't feel like unnecessarily changing his hair color or eye color.
In most games, race selection would be possible next, but in THE MIST, users can only be human, with other races existing only as NPCs. He remembered seeing an interview with the scenario team that emphasized focusing on a living, breathing human world.
[ Please create a name for your character. ]
A name for the character?
"A name..."
After pondering for a moment, he blurted out a plausible name.
"Kapros."
[ Creation complete. ]
It worked even though he chose it casually.
[ Character creation is now complete. Mr. Kapros, you can now depart for the world of THE MIST. Would you like to go? ]
Impressed by the artificial intelligence of the assistant that immediately switched to using the character name, he nodded.
[ Then in THE MIST, may you become the master of infinite possibilities. ]
Whoosh!
When his vision returned after everything went white, he was standing in the middle of a bustling town. Amidst the clamor, countless people were busily going about their business here and there.
He looked down at himself, standing dazed and wearing clothes of unknown origin. When he touched the sleeve, he felt the texture of fabric as real as reality. His hair felt the same, and even when he touched the wall of a nearby house, he could clearly feel the solid, cold surface.
Is this... VT?
It seemed like a joke. It truly felt as if he had come to another world and was touching everything.
As he stood there unable to think due to the shock, he suddenly remembered the biggest reason he had decided to play this game, and snapped back to attention. His two legs were still as they had been when he first stood.
'Can I really walk?'
He first stepped out with his left foot, then very slowly put strength into his heavy right foot. It felt like cold sweat was running down his spine.
And then,
He lifted it,
Moved it,
And took another step to touch the ground again.
So easily. As if there had never been any problem with this leg from the beginning.
"Ah..."
At that moment, something that was neither joy nor emotion shot up his spine. Suddenly feeling a lump in his throat, he lowered his head and leaned against the wall. His right foot, bearing his weight, was doing its job perfectly.
"..."

Jin Soram, the top-ranked hunter representing South Korea's Rift Phenomenon Management Headquarters, is stronger than anyone else and lazier than anyone else. As soon as he arrives at the office, he buries himself under a blanket and falls asleep. When he goes out on a mission, he causes accidents and returns to the office, often shirking his duties.
"Do you know how it feels to play a game that's already messed up? ...Anyway, the next round will come, so this time, I'm just going to play it recklessly."
In fact, his true identity is someone who has regressed through three lives, trying to save the world from the Great Rift but failing each time. After repeating a life where he couldn't sleep peacefully even for a day, he became completely exhausted before this life even began.
"I know. You worked hard, Jin Soram."
And then there's Han Tae-un, the man who saved Soram and died in all three previous lives. As he did in every life, he comes to Soram's side once again. The Great Rift is approaching soon. It's impossible to resolve it in this life without any preparation. Soram vows to save Tae-un in this life and die himself. At least, he won't let Tae-un save a failure like himself again.
"For now, until then, let's sleep..."
As Soram sluggishly lives his life waiting for that moment, a gradual change occurs in his heart.
'I thought this was a messed-up round... but I want to live a little longer here.'
Leonardo Blaine, the true war hero of the Raina Logia Empire and the commander of the Armsilver 11th Squad, is dishonorably discharged for disobeying orders during the final battle that could have led the Empire to victory in the territorial war. People criticize and point fingers at him, and after being released on parole from prison, he disappears without a trace.
Three years later, his name has been forgotten by the world. The Council has been persistently pursuing him, but he has proven difficult to capture. Frustrated by this, Hugo Agrizendro, the commander of the Council's army, decides to personally apprehend him.
"Since when have you been watching me?"
Leonardo was calculative and astute, so it wouldn't be surprising if he had been observing Hugo for some time now. However, Leonardo's answer was something that even Hugo had not anticipated.
"From the very beginning."
