Vol 1 Chapter 9

"Hmm."

He wondered how much training it would take to reach that level.

Well... fine. He used to spend entire days swinging a wooden sword as part of his daily routine. When he was immersed in kendo, he often forgot about time and space. He was confident that he wouldn't lose to anyone when it came to perseverance and patience.

Although he had given up the sword, it was he, Kang Mu-heon, who had put in the effort to be able to walk with a limp to this extent, even when doctors said he would have difficulty walking at all.

[ Now that you've succeeded in the basic practice of magic, we'll move on to the first 1st circle spell, 'Fireball'. From now on, only the incantation and the hologram of the Fireball being cast will be repeated, so please keep that in mind. ]

[ 'Burning power of great nature, leave the mark of a wound at this moment.' ]

"Alright... Shall we begin now?"

Looking at the slowly rising incantation for Fireball, he grinned.

"Burning power of great nature, leave the mark of a wound at this moment! Fireball!"

In the world filled with horizontal and vertical lines, he quickly drew the circle of promise, put his arm inside its trajectory to set the range, and imagined a Fireball the size of a human head. Immediately, the magic manifested, and fire flared up.

The time it took up to this point was about 3 seconds.

Considering that it used to take over a minute to manifest a single spell at first, this was tremendous progress.

He grinned again, and then extended his hand inside the circle of promise towards the wall. The formula world (that's what they called the grid of lines) between his hand and the Fireball turned white-hot, and the Fireball flew towards the wall as he desired, colliding with it.

Bang!

"Good."

He withdrew his hand, satisfied.

It had already been two weeks since he entered this private room. After successfully mastering the 1st circle spells taught by the tower's hologram, he had bought a 2nd circle book sold by the tower itself and was practicing in the tower's private room.

While THE MIST's magic kindly provided hologram videos of basic implementation images for 1st circle spells, from the 2nd circle onwards, one had to buy spell books and create their own images while memorizing only the incantations written in them.

The books sold in the tower contained only the most basic spells and only up to the 5th circle, but Saturn mentioned that one could obtain other books anywhere in the world of THE MIST. Even within the same circle, numerous spells existed, so it was up to the users to find and master them.

There were more fascinating elements: while the formula world was visible only to the caster, the circle of promise could be seen by anyone when a mage drew the circle. The effect of magic manifesting there, as if dancing, was enough to captivate anyone in THE MIST, aside from the difficulty of casting it.

In the meantime, users had already acquired numerous jobs, and among them were occasional hidden classes. The names of prominent high-level users were often on people's lips.

Although his level was still 1 because he had been holed up training, the magic proficiency levels shown when he opened his skill window were steadily rising.

"Open skill window."

The basic skill window contained skills that anyone could learn, while the magic skill window only listed magic skills that could be learned by his job as a mage.

When he pressed his finger on the magic section, the window expanded.

Passive skills were the foundation of all skills and applied automatically, differing from attack spells in that their effects were continuous but invisible, unlike the immediately visible effects of attack spells.

One thing he realized while learning magic over the two weeks was that the old mage's words during the job change held quite a profound meaning. He referred to mages not just as "those who use magic" but more as "those who imagine magic." This turned out to be the biggest variable in one's ability to use magic in THE MIST. Shocking reports from user experiments revealed that the power varied depending on "how well one grasps the image of magic" and "how one imagines the manifestation of magic."

The fact that the same spell could have different power and manifestation images depending on the person meant that THE MIST's VT technology was that advanced. They seemed to have gone beyond the level of connecting brainwaves to the game, to connecting the brain itself to the game.

The world was once again enthusiastic, and THE MIST began to burn even hotter.

Various other amazing things unique to THE MIST were announced for other weapons and jobs as well, but he didn't know about them because he had turned off his interest in anything other than magic. The work of imagining was never boring. Learning magic was as difficult as he had initially anticipated, but it was equally enjoyable.

"Anyway, I'll stop here for today, and now I should try some hunting."

If he had mastered the 1st circle and was learning from the 2nd circle book, most beginner hunts should be easily possible.

He put the book in his inventory window, stood up, and went outside.

"Are you finishing already today?"

The Wizard Tower assistant, who had seemed stiff when he first saw him but had become familiar and even friendly after seeing him so much over the two weeks, smiled brightly at him. His name was Zen, and he had a good personality, allowing even someone as guarded as himself to quickly feel at ease. Well, it would be a problem if an assistant NPC had a difficult personality.

As he came out of the Wizard Tower, he felt quite refreshed. The weather in Mist was always clear, perhaps because weather implementation wasn't working well yet, but he preferred it that way. Leisurely strolling through the streets on a clear day was one of his great pleasures in Mist.

Wanting to walk more diverse paths, he always took new routes, and as he was passing through a back alley darker than usual, he suddenly heard muffled groans and the sound of hitting.

"Urgh!"

When he turned his head, he saw a man enthusiastically beating up two others at the end of a secluded alley.

"Aagh! Stop, stop it!"

Leonardo was calculative and astute, so it wouldn't be surprising if he had been observing Hugo for some time now. However, Leonardo's answer was something that even Hugo had not anticipated.
