Vol 2 Chapter 56
Yu-wan wiped his cheek and gestured with his eyes, and as Kran nodded, they started running again towards areas with fewer people.
"Hah... ha... I think we're almost there!"
Kran shouted with a hopeful face. Kapros, feeling moved that he could finally stop this hellish run, used his last bit of strength to sprint.
"Just a little more...!"
Slash!
Suddenly, with a tremendous sound, countless people collapsed in front of them, blocking their path.
"Aaargh!"
"It's the Pale Knights' guild master!"
'...What did they say?'
At the same time, Kapros saw several people turning back and fleeing hastily behind them as if they'd seen a ghost. He ended up coming face to face with the man in black armor who was walking through the people disappearing as they logged out in succession, unable to react in time.
The man standing there wearing a helmet and holding a blood-dripping sword felt extremely out of place in this chaotic scene.
"..."
"..."
Like a predator about to feast, the eyes between the helmet leisurely scanned them, not rushing at all. Just that alone made it feel like their bodies were trapped, unable to break through past him. A feeling close to certainty that they absolutely couldn't just pass by if they collided hammered in Kapros's mind.
'So this is Caesar. I didn't expect to run into him so suddenly...'
But it was a strange thing. While his thoughts were rational, his eyes couldn't be torn away from inside that barely visible helmet. The other also stared intensely at Kapros with his hood pulled down. No, Kapros wasn't sure if he was looking or not, but it felt that way.
'What on earth is this...?'
Was it an illusion that Kapros felt a strange sense of discomfort lingering between Caesar and himself? ...After what felt like an incredibly long yet also fleeting moment, Kran was the first to come to his senses.
"D-Damn it. Black Swordsman! Run!"
Kran grabbed Kapros's arm and changed direction, starting to run for dear life. Yu-wan also grabbed the other arm and ran as soon as Kran finished speaking. Being dragged like a suddenly accelerating motorcycle, Kapros barely managed to tear his gaze away from that dangerous helmet and turn his head.
"Haste!"
As he cast the spell he had only put on himself to now envelop Yu-wan and Kran as well, he suddenly felt that it was too chilly both behind and in front of them. While being pulled along by Yu-wan and Kran, Kapros glanced back. And soon felt a chill that made his hair stand on end.
"...He's chasing us!"
"What?"
Kran, who quickly looked back at Kapros's words, let out a shout.
"Why, why is that bastard chasing us?"
Caesar in the black helmet, grasping his aura sword in a truly terrifying manner, was chasing after them. Kapros quickly stretched one hand towards the back.
"When the lowered earth reverses towards the sky, the rock shall become a traitor and pierce like an eternal dagger rising up. Stone Edge!"
He almost lost concentration trying to cast hurriedly while running, but fortunately, he was able to properly complete the circle, casting, and incantation.
Rumble, boom! Bang!
Soon, the sound of magic being cast that he could recognize without seeing came from behind. Since he had imagined it especially large for defense and it was 5th circle magic, it shouldn't be easy to escape from. However, the moment of relief was short-lived as Yu-wan looked back and then gripped Kapros's arm even tighter with a hardened expression. Surprised by Yu-wan's grip strength, Kapros also looked back.
'...This can't be.'
Caesar was still easily chasing after them, only dirtied by the mound of earth and slightly further away. Shocked that the magic hadn't worked properly, Kapros gritted his teeth. Yu-wan shouted at Kran as if he couldn't take it anymore.
"Let go of his arm."
"Why, you idiot!"
"Let go!"
As Kran reluctantly loosened his grip while looking uneasy, Yu-wan pulled on Kapros's arm and lifted him up just like he had done in that maze dungeon. The difference this time was that instead of slinging him over his shoulder, he cradled him gently in front. Kapros felt like he was turning white in an instant and tried to push Yu-wan away, but as Yu-wan accelerated forward, he was instead pressed down by the air pressure.
"You!"
"This is faster."
"Black Swordsman! You shameless bastard! Doing something nice all by yourself at a time like this, you jerk!"
Kran started running at twice the speed as before, his eyes burning with anger. Yu-wan just kept running with an expressionless face. In front were people terrified by this sight, behind was the pursuing black helmet. It was almost enough to make Kapros regret choosing to be a mage for the first time.
Not long after, Kapros spotted a place in the distance where the brown plain ended and green grasslands began again, and he muttered weakly.
"...Run faster."
Yu-wan looked down at him and smirked.
"Alright. ...But actually, I want to run slowly."
There would be time later to think about the true meaning of those words.
Still feeling anxious about the footsteps chasing from behind, they passed through numerous fighting people and the brown plain, ran across the grasslands for quite some time, and finally succeeded in reaching the front of a high hill with a large cave entrance.
"With time's kiss, bind the enemy's feet. Hold Person!"
While Yu-wan briefly slowed down, Kapros exerted extreme concentration to cast another 5th circle spell behind them. Without time to check whether it had worked or not, they climbed up the hill and plunged into the cave.
As soon as they entered the cave, Kapros quickly got down from Yu-wan's arms. Perhaps because they had suddenly left the noisy place and dropped into a quiet space, it wasn't easy to adapt.
"So this is..."
Kran was looking around with a slightly hardened expression. Although there was nothing around as this was the entrance, the unpleasantly winding cave that stretched endlessly inward was so dark that it was difficult to make out even a step ahead. Kapros scanned the inside of the cave once, then turned back with a frown.
"Aren't you going? I cast Hold Person, but we don't know when he'll catch up."
