Vol 2 Chapter 65

"Kran!"

When Kapros shouted loudly, Kran turned around with a surprised expression, came down in one step, and grabbed him.

"Kap, what should we do? We're short on offerings!"

"What?"

Suddenly, offerings? Feeling confused, Kapros stood in front of the rock table where Kran led him. Then he noticed something strange.

On the table, there was a black star pattern drawn inside a large circle, with its vertices touching, and there was an additional small golden circle at the center and each vertex. It seemed that Kran had been placing strange objects inside each of the golden circles at the vertices, leaving just one empty while stomping his feet.

A strange scrap of paper, a worn-out handkerchief, a ring woven from grass, and even an empty bottle that looked like trash no matter how you looked at it. Rather than the grand name of offerings, this was more like...

"Are you supposed to place junk items?"

At Kapros's dazed words, Kran went "Huh?" and shook his head vigorously.

"It's not like that. These are all memorable items I've received and kept from before."

"Where from?"

As Kapros looked puzzled, suddenly a golden pillar of light rose slightly from the center of the star with a whirring sound. Kran visibly flinched at that.

'What's this?'

Kapros wasn't calm either, feeling anxious to resolve this quickly and get back to Yu-wan, but seeing that reaction, he momentarily felt his temper rising. Just as he was about to lash out, a voice came from within the circle.

- Time has expired.

"Ugh!"

As Kran groaned, the items placed on the small circles were flung outwards. Ignoring Kran, who was picking them up again with a tearful face, the voice calmly continued to say its piece.

- Place five objects given by strangers as a sign of gratitude for help on the vertices of the sacred star. That is the first proof that a knight of the god who helps those in distress must provide.

"...Those in distress, what?"

To Kapros, who was dumbfounded, Kran, who had picked up all four items and stood up, slumped his shoulders and made a tearful face.

"So... When you help NPCs in danger, they sometimes give you items as a reward. Sometimes these might look like useless objects, but... I personally had four items from such memories. For example, this scrap of paper is a 'Torelit Ingbella Tavern Permanent Discount Coupon' I received for saving the NPC tavern owner in Torelit from drunk people destroying property, and this grass ring is a clover ring I got for helping an NPC who was about to die from monsters while gathering wild strawberries on an errand for his mother. That kind of thing. ...But as you can see, we need to place five on the circle, and we're one short."

"..."

"Aaargh! I just want to jump off!"

Kapros's mood was also on the verge of exploding as he watched Kran screaming.

If he had known this would happen, he should have brought Kion-hyung along somehow, Kion-hyung. With a personality similar to Kran's, Kion-hyung might have had a basketful of such items.

"Hah..."

But Kion-hyung wasn't here now, and there was no way to create non-existent items here.

Should they... give up like this here?

An overwhelming sense of despair welled up. After standing still for a moment, Kapros finally calmed down a bit and looked at Kran while clutching his throbbing head.

"It can't be helped. Then let's go help Yu-wan right now at least..."

"Kap! Just in case, check your item window too. I'll search one more time as well!"

Cutting off Kapros's words about going to help Yu-wan, Kran shouted 'Item window!' with fire in his eyes. Kapros sighed anxiously once again as he watched him. Yu-wan would be holding off Caesar alone even at this moment. Looking for something that... doesn't exist...

Suddenly, a voice popped up in his head.

"I'll give you this."

Huh?

"This flower is the prettiest thing I have. Thank you so much."

...Who, who was it?

After wracking his brain, Kapros finally remembered the owner of that voice. It was none other than the flower-selling NPC girl from when he first met Kion-hyung, who had been the cause of their first fight with other users.

That NPC girl had given Kapros an item while thanking them for punishing the users who had bullied her. He had just kept it stored and forgotten about it until now, but if he looked, it should still be there!

"I have it!"

At Kapros's sudden shout, Kran's eyes widened.

"Huh? What?"

"If I didn't throw it away, it should definitely be there. It must be."

Kran looked at Kapros in confusion as he opened his item window with eyes full of joy, then seemed to realize the reason for Kapros's elation and ran over shouting.

"Really? Is it true?"

"I'll look for it."

As soon as he activated it, a translucent window appeared containing various objects. After thoroughly searching through it, Kapros finally found what he wanted and cheered.

"Here it is...!"

When he tapped it with his finger, a flower that was in the exact same condition as when he received it appeared in his hand. The moment Kran saw it, he shouted 'We did it!' with an expression that looked like he might burst into tears. At last, we succeeded in placing items on all five vertices of the star.

"I never expected someone with Kap's personality to have an item like this... I couldn't have predicted this at all."

Kran muttered as he gazed in rapture at the golden light that burst forth again with a whirring sound.

"I got it because of Kion-hyung."

"What? That hyung who looks like he'd beat up anyone? Really?"

Well, it would be a bit unexpected until one saw hyung's true nature.

As they talked, the golden light began to intensify. Kran, who was watching it with a tense face, looked at Kapros and awkwardly opened his mouth.

"Hey, Kap... What if it rejects it again saying it's not something I received?"

...He hadn't thought of that. But he realized it could happen. This was Kran's quest, after all.

But after all we've been through to get here!
