Vol 2 Chapter 66
"Reject it again?"
Kran let out a startled gasp at the sudden murderous smile. Ignoring him, Kapros gazed at the intensifying light and whispered softly.
"After coming all this way, in this situation... Just try rejecting it one more time. I'll show you what happens then."
If it really came to that, Kapros was determined to storm the company headquarters.
Whirr!
- Conditions have been met.
At those words that came as if in response, Kran was left speechless and looked back and forth between the pillar of light and Kapros. Then he immediately shouted with an incredulous expression.
"What! It works when you threaten it?! Is that how it is?!"
"Shut up. Let's move on to the next step."
Kran, who had been agonizing, soon looked back at the star where the light had faded. The objects placed on the altar had disappeared. The small golden circles at the star's vertices were also gone, and what remained was...
"Only the central circle."
"Ah..."
Both Kran and Kapros naturally realized what needed to be placed there. Kran looked into Kapros's eyes once and then carefully placed what he had been preciously holding in his other fist at the center of the star.
The thin rhombus-shaped pendant with a transparent golden gem was gently placed. The moment it was set down, the tense silence was broken, and a dazzling light burst forth brightly.
Flash!
Kapros stepped back and watched the pillar of light that enveloped Kran's entire body so strongly that he couldn't be seen. Had it looked like this when he saw his own 'memories'? It was quite fascinating.
It felt as if he might be sucked into the brilliant light just by watching. Fortunately, not much time passed as he watched anxiously, and as the light slowly faded, Kran's figure reappeared.
"Ah..."
Kran shook his head for a moment, then soon spotted Kapros and grinned, making a victory sign.
"Completed!"
"Congratulations. Now then..."
They needed to hurry and go help Yu-wan.
"Wait a moment."
However, Kran, who had asked to wait, drew his sword, raised it over the rock, and steadied his breath.
"Just wait a bit. We should receive what we get here before leaving."
"Ah..."
Right. Was there always a skill left at the place where memories were seen?
"Hah!"
Rumble!
As the white sword struck down like lightning, it flashed brightly, and as if by magic, the rock split cleanly in half. Kran put his sword back with precision and approached the gaping rock, reaching his hand inside. What his fumbling hand brought out were two items.
"Hahaha! Finally, after all that hardship... Huh? Two of them!"
Was hardship proportional to reward? What Kran pulled out was a gauntlet encased in golden metal and a skill book.
"Sniff. It's so moving. I can die happy now..."
"There's no time for that. Let's go right..."
Boom, rumble, rumble...
Just as Kapros was about to mercilessly drag away Kran, who was trying to shed tears of joy while putting away the skill book and immediately putting on the gauntlet, he turned around at the sudden vibration from behind.
"Stairs going up... It's a passage!"
"Really..."
Whether it was a reward for Kran's difficult journey or what, there was undoubtedly a passage open behind the rock, even after rubbing his eyes. Kapros was elated at the sight that looked just like the passage they had seen when coming down.
With this, they could get out without encountering Caesar!
"Let's go. We need to get Yu-wan quickly!"
Kran followed, nodding firmly, as Kapros strode through without another word.
"Blink, Blink, Blink!"
Please still be safe, Yu-wan.
Although they had finished as quickly as possible, quite a bit of time had passed. Yu-wan had been facing Caesar alone with his tired body during that time. Though he had spoken normally when he left, the fact that Yu-wan had brought out the long aura he had used only once before meant he had gone with firm resolve. The uncertainty of the situation made Kapros use Blink even if it meant squeezing out his remaining mana.
"Kap, wait! Slow down a bit..."
Kran shouted as he ran behind, but Kapros kept using Blink. Finally, as they approached the start of the bridge, the booming sounds that had been heard intermittently grew much louder.
'Just a little more...!'
Bang!
Just as Kapros was about to turn the last rock, the ground shook violently with a tremendous roar. The impact, as if the ground he was standing on was exploding, almost made him lose his balance. The shockwave, incomparable to before, was enough to make his ears ring.
"Ugh...!"
"Aah! Kap, I told you to go slowly..."
Kran's words, as he grabbed Kapros's arm in fright, suddenly trailed off. When Kapros looked up quizzically, he saw Kran's face staring ahead with a dazed expression.
What is it? What happened?
The moment Kapros slowly turned his head to where Kran was looking, he saw it.
Suddenly, the world began to slow down. Sound faded away.
The bridge, completely destroyed from far away to nearby.
Rocks still falling.
A man just falling backward.
The dark blue hair and familiar black armor caught his eye first, and what was scattering in the air above was blood. The owner of the hand holding the sword embedded in his shoulder had unmistakable silver hair.
"..."
Up to that point, everything seemed to move extremely slowly. But when the world that had been breathless and silent suddenly expanded greatly, and sounds became audible again along with incomprehensible shouts.
The man had already fallen like an arrow.
Who... who had fallen?
"Black Swordsman! Damn it! Yu-wan!"
Kran pushed past Kapros and ran frantically. Kapros stood dazed, his eyes moving back and forth, and then saw Caesar standing on the opposite side of the bridge. Caesar was looking in his direction too. But he soon turned sharply and strode away. The black cloak fluttering behind him was now in tatters, unlike before. Kapros's gaze was caught by its edges.
Kapros, who had remained motionless, only turned his gaze after Caesar's cloak edge had disappeared from view, taking in a breath. When he hurriedly turned his head to look at the collapsed bridge, there was no one there.
No one...
"Yu...wan."
The name that barely escaped Kapros's lips suddenly felt terribly unfamiliar. Only a chilling silence occupied the space, with no answer. The next moment, Kapros found himself running frantically forward, feeling like his head was about to explode.
"Yu-wan, Yu-wan, Yu-wan, Yu-wan! Yu-wan!"
"Kap!"
Why isn't he answering, why isn't he appearing!
The cliff that Kapros barely managed to kneel at and look down, as if clinging to it, was like an abyss too dark and deep. As if it would never spit out anything that had fallen into it.
For the first time, Kapros thought he might understand what it felt like for one's heart to feel like it was about to burst. Yu-wan's last words to him spun madly inside his head.
"It's okay."
"I don't think anything too bad will happen. That idiot... no. Kran should be able to protect you. I'll follow soon, so hurry and go."
"My destination is always you. Don't... doubt that."
"Yu-wan!"
