Vol 5 Chapter 50
Swoosh, woosh, woosh... Pip pip!
As Kapros forcibly tried to cancel Detect Magic, he felt resistance and his already rapidly depleting magical power plummeting once again. Even with his eyes closed, the dizziness made him feel like all his strength was draining away, but he endured and stood firm. After a moment, Detect Magic completely faded.
Then, automatically and without hindrance, Aerial Servant, now alone, started up smoothly. After confirming that his vision was comfortably split into two, Kapros chanted the spell once more.
"Detect Magic!"
And once again,
"Detect Magic!"
He chanted the same spell.
Spells like Fireball could be duplicated dozens or hundreds of times at will. So why not do the same with Detect Magic? He could put the blue glasses on his own eyes and on Aerial Servant as well. There was no need to forcibly divide it. It was just a simple difference in thinking, but in MIST, where magic was implemented through imagination, it made an enormous difference.
As soon as he finished speaking, feeling the light of the magic circle erupting from beneath his feet in bright blue, Kapros smiled refreshingly with a clear mind no longer plagued by headaches. It was a perfect success, even without looking!
"Fireball!"
He cast Fireball once more, this time creating five instead of three, adding two more than before, and they all floated brightly without issue, illuminating his path ahead. Seeing the Aerial Servant's vision, tinged with the deep blue energy of Detect Magic, flying around in circles in the air as he wished, gave him an incredible sense of achievement.
Once again, he had won.
[ When I saw you continuing to think without even blinking while your magical power was draining rapidly, I was so scared I thought you had given up completely. ]
"I would never do such a thing."
Kapros replied coldly to Superior's sigh-mixed words, and his right hand waved in front of him as if understanding, then dropped.
[ I get it. I guess I underestimated you too much. Who would have thought you could so easily accomplish the simultaneous linking of 1st, 3rd, and 6th circle spells just by changing the order of activation. ]
Kapros just chuckled and didn't reply.
Currently, one of his two split views was busy racing ahead through the cave with Fireballs in the lead, without any obstacles. Kapros had sent Aerial Servant ahead with two Fireballs attached, and he was comfortably following behind, sharing the view of the scouting Aerial Servant.
Although he had been walking for what felt like over an hour, there had been no significant findings as nothing was visible yet. The only change so far was that the path seemed to be getting narrower and sharply winding downwards. Still, unlike earlier when he couldn't see even an inch ahead, being able to see the path ahead now made it feel like a comfortable stroll where he no longer needed to be tense.
As he was walking forward for a few more minutes like that, Superior suddenly spoke in a puzzled voice.
[ Hey, doesn't it feel like the temperature around us has risen a bit? ]
Upon hearing this, Kapros stopped and took a few deep breaths, indeed feeling the air becoming slightly stuffy. Since it wasn't yet at a level where he could feel hot, he slowly continued walking, but from that point on, it became increasingly difficult to breathe, and a scorching energy began to wash over him as if it would sear his skin.
Although nothing unusual was visible in the scouting Aerial Servant's view, the change in the air he felt suggested that there must be something incredible that he couldn't even imagine at the end of this path.
"Ice Bolt."
As he cast Ice Bolt, a spell he had learned along with Fire Bolt but rarely used, an ice arrow emitting pure white coldness appeared. When he grasped it and held it near his face, he felt his breathing ease and a sense of comfort.
[ Oh, you use magic quite practically. ]
Superior's voice was filled with curiosity.
Kapros wanted to retort that it was his business how he used magic, but he said nothing and continued walking. Shortly after, he faced a situation where the magically created Ice Bolt was half-melted due to the increasingly intense heat.
It was astounding that it was this bad, even though he knew that in the game, temperature, like pain, had almost no effect. With a mindset of seeing who would win, he summoned three or four more Ice Bolts and stuck them to various parts of his body like guards, but breathing became increasingly difficult. It felt like entering a sauna, where breathing suddenly becomes hard and the air you inhale and exhale feels infinitely hot.
It was a great relief that he wasn't sweating yet, but if it got any hotter, he felt he wouldn't be able to endure in his current thick clothing. Kapros took off his robe and put it in his item window, then unbuttoned the tightly fastened collar of the clothes he was wearing. Only then did breathing seem to become a little easier.
'Ah...!'
At that moment, a red light entered the view of the Aerial Servant flying about 3 meters ahead. Kapros instinctively guessed that this was the end of the path. He immediately recalled the Aerial Servant and ordered it to follow beside him, then started running forward.
Soon after, the red light at the end of the path that he had seen through the Aerial Servant entered his real eyes. Hot breath burst from his nose with each step as he ran towards the shimmering mirage-like light.
Unable to run at proper speed due to the extremely hot air, he approached the end of the path at a slow jog like an ordinary person. Just before emerging, he unconsciously stopped in his tracks at the spectacle before his eyes.
"This is...!"
A crimson sea spread out before his eyes.
It was a pit of lava existing in a vast underground space that stretched from the cave he had just emerged from to a faintly visible path in the distance. Lava bubbling up hazily while emitting sulfurous air bubbles, and walls glowing red-hot and melting down. It was as if the whole world was on fire.
As Kapros stood there, not knowing what to do, Superior, who had also been silent, laughed lightly and asked a question.
