Vol 5 Chapter 57

Unable to say anything, his heart aching unbearably, Kapros closed his eyes. Rationally, he knew he should grab Jeong Seung-jo immediately and say something, but the pain of the past wound that had suddenly burst open again prevented him from taking any action.

"I... I won't give up."

"..."

At the small words he barely managed to utter, the person walking behind seemed to pause for a moment, but soon the sound of footsteps descending the stairs was heard, and Jeong Seung-jo's presence completely disappeared. Kapros thought he had caught a faint smell of blood from Jeong Seung-jo as he passed by, but he couldn't be sure if it was really the smell of blood.

"Hah..."

Only long after Jeong Seung-jo had disappeared did Kapros's tension ease. He unconsciously staggered back a few steps and bumped into someone, startling him to turn around.

"Ah..."

Jin Je-hwan, whom Kapros had forgotten about in his tension upon seeing Jeong Seung-jo, was standing there without making a sound. Only then did Kapros remember that he had come to his house on Je-hwan's motorcycle and that Je-hwan had come up with him, making him feel incredibly awkward. He was already exhausted just from exchanging a few words with Jeong Seung-jo, so how on earth was he supposed to explain this to Je-hwan, who had been watching everything from right behind?

Jeong Seung-jo's existence was inevitably close to the secret Kapros least wanted to talk about. He didn't want to tell anyone who hadn't been watching him from before about what happened then, nor did he want it to be discovered.

Feeling at a loss for having been caught unprepared, Kapros was trying to think of a way to explain things vaguely when Je-hwan suddenly grabbed his hand. It was the arm where his fingertips had inadvertently touched Jeong Seung-jo's when he was handing over the cane. Kapros blinked several times, flustered by this unexpected action.

"Um, about what just happened..."

"It was him."

Je-hwan spoke with the same expressionless face and calm voice as usual, so Kapros didn't register what he had said for a moment.

"What?"

"It was him. The one who did this to you."

The second time he spoke, the intense anger and hostility that deeply filled the undercurrent of that calm voice became clearly evident. Above all, those eyes. How could Kapros have mistaken those bottomlessly dark, sunken eyes for being the same as usual? What had he just seen?

As Kapros stood there with his mouth open, bewildered by the intensity, Je-hwan let go of his hand as if no answer was needed and turned around without hesitation. Je-hwan strode away, and only when his back view approached the stairs did Kapros finally realize what he was about to do. Forgetting even to use his cane, Kapros limped after him on his uncomfortable leg. His head was pounding with pain.

"Wait. Where are you going?"

Je-hwan stopped walking and glanced at Kapros, his lips moving slightly.

"I'm going to make him pay."

In other words, he was going to go after Jeong Seung-jo right now, so don't try to stop him. Je-hwan left those words and started descending the stairs again as if he didn't need to hear a response.

'No!'

Desperate to prevent Je-hwan from seeing Jeong Seung-jo, Kapros grabbed the railing and shouted angrily.

"Wait! This has nothing to do with you!"

Je-hwan stopped abruptly when Kapros shouted at his back as he was going down the stairs. The sudden loud shout made Kapros's head ring, but he continued shouting while catching his breath.

"It's my business. This is between him and me! It's not something for an uninvolved person to step in. Your actions now are clearly meddling...!"

His words were cut off because Je-hwan had turned around and started coming back up. Approaching Kapros, Je-hwan stared at him for a long time with coldly boiling eyes, then moved only his lips slowly while keeping his gaze fixed.

"Nothing to do with me?"

The emotion in his wavering eyes was on the verge of explosion.

"Nothing to do?"

Then, with eyes bloodshot as if sparks might fly, Je-hwan growled in front of Kapros for the first time.

"Am I so uninvolved that I can't even get angry at the person who hurt you?"

"What...?"

"Your business, yes... That's right. But don't you worry when something happens to someone important to you? Don't you get angry?"

Important, what...? As Kapros was at a loss for words, Je-hwan glared at him with eyes flickering like flames, clenching his jaw.

"Or is it that you'd worry about others but not about me? But I've been holding back this anger ever since I first saw you collapsed and bleeding in the taxi! And now, you say it has nothing to do with me?"

Somehow, their faces had gotten close enough that they might bite each other. By this point, Kapros was starting to get angry too, not at the core of what he had meant to say, but at Je-hwan who was getting angry about something else.

"I don't understand what you're trying to say. What I said wasn't about you and me, I was just telling you to stop trying to go outside right now. What's the problem? I'm telling you not to go because it has nothing to do with you!"

"So... I have nothing to do with you?"

This bastard, really!

"That's not it. What I want to say is that you have nothing to do with this particular matter. There are things where other people's interference shouldn't be allowed, and shouldn't be accepted!"

As Kapros spoke forcefully, hoping his meaning would get through while suppressing his anger, the veins on Je-hwan's clenched arm bulged, casting dark shadows. Je-hwan, who seemed to be trying to control his emotions by gritting his teeth, finally couldn't hold back and shouted once more.

"Then what about my feelings? Are my feelings not important to you at all? Is that it?"

After spitting out those last words, Je-hwan finally couldn't overcome his intensified emotions and punched the wall next to Kapros's head. A dull thud echoed along the corridor walls. The already unpleasant atmosphere instantly turned hostile. Kapros turned his head to look at the fist embedded in the wall next to his head, then slowly glared at Je-hwan.

"You... Are you trying to threaten me now?"
