Vol 4 Chapter 28
#(2)
As the capsule opened and Kapros felt the machines detaching from his body, he stared at the ceiling pattern. Strangely, his body was covered in cold sweat. He extended his arm to grab the capsule, raised his upper body, then planted his feet on the ground and came out of the capsule. The sensation of his sweat-soaked body cooling in the chilly air of the house wasn't particularly pleasant.
"Computer, raise the temperature."
[ ...Understood. ]
As he heard the whirring sound of the system activating, the computer's voice was heard once more.
[ You have 13 missed video calls. Would you like to check them? ]
Thirteen missed calls...?
"Check them."
As soon as he finished speaking, a hologram screen popped up in the living room, visible from where he was.
[ 1. 15:07:39 :Video: [Kran] - 01c 818 4505 ]
[ 2. 15:08:24 :Video: [Kran] - 01c 818 4505 ]
[ 3. 15:08:55 :Video: [Kran] - 01c 818 4505 ]
[ 4. 15:09:41 :Video: [Kran] - 01c 818 4505 ]
[ 5. 16:01:29 :Video: [Kran] - 01c 818 4505 ]
...
'Kran...?'
As Kapros was staring at the list, unable to speak for a moment upon seeing that all thirteen calls were from Kran's number, suddenly a loud beeping sound came from the computer.
Beep beep! Beep beep!
[ You have an urgent video call from registered name [Kran]. Would you like to accept? ]
Only upon hearing those words did Kapros feel his breath catch and then release unconsciously.
"Ha..."
Wiping the sweat from his forehead, he went to the living room and accepted the video call. Immediately, a hologram spread out in the air with a ding, and Kran's, no, Min-hoo's face appeared large.
Pop!
[ Kap! It's me, are you okay? ]
As if in a great hurry, Min-hoo shouted the in-game name as loudly as possible while thrusting his face towards the screen. Seeing Min-hoo's expression, no different from usual, something hot boiled over inside Kapros.
"You..."
[ I'm really sorry for making such a request earlier! But you know, when I was frozen in one hit and logged out immediately, it was so cold that I still feel like my whole body is frozen. From now on, I think I'll cry when I see the frozen fish in the freezer at home, wondering how I'll eat them. No, that's not what I meant... ]
As Kapros watched Min-hoo's face, flushed and even heated from talking with blood rushing to it, he overlapped it with the image of the face that had been pale white from losing too much blood just moments ago. The armor and cloak soaked in blood were still vivid in his mind, but seeing Kran... no, Jung Min-hoo so perfectly fine in front of him now made everything that had happened earlier feel like a dream.
After staring for a long time at Min-hoo, who was trying to lighten the mood with his bright demeanor and even apologizing to Kapros first, Kapros bowed his head and spoke.
"I'm sorry."
[ Huh? What? ]
Facing Min-hoo, who was clearly bewildered, Kapros muttered painfully once more.
"I should have listened to you... Your death was all because of me."
Kapros had insisted on going alone even when Min-hoo had said that Caesar was dangerous and that they should absolutely not confront him recklessly, but avoid him. Thinking about it now, what an absurdly careless attitude it had been. Even knowing that Kran wasn't the type to leave a friend behind, Kapros had been so stubborn. If he hadn't said such things, maybe they could have avoided Caesar before he caught up with them later.
In the end, it was as good as Kapros, in his stupidity, having killed Kran. No, he had actually killed him.
As Kapros gritted his teeth and bowed his head, a gentle call came from beyond the quiet hologram.
[ Kap. No, Mu-heon. ]
At the voice calling him without any sign of anger or displeasure, Kapros clenched his fist tighter, and Min-hoo called out even more softly.
[ Mu-heon. Look at me. ]
At those words, as Kapros slowly raised his head, Min-hoo was smiling as if he was truly in a good mood.
[ Even if you had turned back according to my words then, wouldn't Caesar have chased us again sometime? With a very high probability at that. Looking at his actions so far, that's how it seems. Thinking about it that way, it might actually be better that we encountered him today and dealt him a big blow. At least from now on, he'll be more cautious before messing with us, right? ]
"Even so..."
[ Do I look even slightly upset right now? I don't, right? Besides, I didn't properly tell you about the effects of the Holy Transfer skill in the first place... It was the first time I saw you so surprised. So if anything, you should be the one beating me up. ]
That was true. If Kapros had known the effects of that Holy Transfer skill earlier, he would have absolutely prevented Kran from casting that skill on him.
Perhaps that thought showed on his face, because Min-hoo laughed out loud.
[ Hahaha! But I really liked that skill because of this incident. If you had really been stabbed and died, I would have given up everything and gone on a PK spree. It's because you're the calm one that you managed to handle the situation and deal with me in the midst of all that. Right? ]
In fact, Kapros knew that Min-hoo was more calm and broad-sighted than himself. Feeling that such a person was worrying about him to the point of putting himself down, Kapros could only sigh deeply and shake his head.
"Don't ever use that skill on me again. If you use that skill on me one more time, be prepared to never see my face again."
As Kapros spoke coldly with sincerity, Min-hoo scratched his head for a moment and then smiled awkwardly.
[ Uh... Of course. From now on, there will absolutely never be an incident like today. I'll become strong enough that I won't die again, ever. ]
Only after hearing that firm assurance did Kapros finally feel his heart ease. He sank deep into the sofa he was sitting on and asked.
"How long is the login restriction period?"
[ Ah... It's just the regular penalty period. Three days in real time. ]
Three days...
A long time if you think it's long, a short time if you think it's short.
"I see..."

And then there's Han Tae-un, the man who saved Soram and died in all three previous lives. As he did in every life, he comes to Soram's side once again. The Great Rift is approaching soon. It's impossible to resolve it in this life without any preparation. Soram vows to save Tae-un in this life and die himself. At least, he won't let Tae-un save a failure like himself again.
